Case Study: Colourgen
Water resistant prints are rather important in the building trade
Colourgen reseller, The CAD Warehouse, has provided RDA Consulting with the latest Seiko II Infotech Teriostar integrated CAD printer and scanner designed to provide faster prints, improved workflow capabilities and weather resistant prints
Based in Paisley near Glasgow, RDA Consulting provides a range of consultancy services for civil and structural engineering projects. The scope of the work encompasses all aspects of building, from desktop studies and site investigation, to final design of building structures.
RDA Consulting’s managing director, Jim Rowland, said: “We generally produce A1 size plans for our customers and also for use by managers and builders on site. However, we were becoming increasingly frustrated with our previous inkjet printer because output was slow and the inks had no resistance to water. As soon as any rain came into contact with the prints the image would smudge. Builders, and particularly bricklayers, who needed to read off dimensions and detailed information were liable to misinterpret details.”
RDA carried out a review of suitable products and was introduced to the Seiko II Teriostar LP 1010 MF by The CAD Warehouse. The Teriostar offers a print speed of 3.4 A0 size prints per minute (600dpi) to a maximum length of 10m. It also features a two-roll drawer system which supports multiple sized rolls. Users can choose between the automatic drawer selector or sheet feed to load media. The LP-1010 MF has a built in CIS scanner with true optical resolution of 600dpi, which can be adjusted to three different user settings (200, 400 and 600dpi). Equipped with a large easy to use display, users can sort, collate, scan-to-file then print, copy and scale images (from 25 to 400% with retained quality) directly from the control panel.
Water-resistance
Jim added: “The Teriostar promises high quality output, faster printing speeds, better workflow management and also, critically, the toner gives the output a certain level of water-resistance. The CAD Warehouse installed the printer in September and it has already had a dramatic impact on our business. We can now print multiple copies of plans from different users very easily, which saves us lots of administration time and allows us to be more flexible for our customers. We are also able to provide high quality prints that can be used on-site without worrying about the weather.
“We have also been really impressed with the scanning capabilities of the Teriostar. We have many printed plans from older projects, which we have been able to scan into our system. We can also use materials and photography provided by our customers to scan and integrate into our own plans.”
“We are delighted with the Teriostar. It is very easy to use, requires very little training in order to get going and has been very reliable. We are aware that there is plenty of functionality that we are not yet using and we are working towards increasing how we utilise its capabilities. Overall, the machine is saving a lot of time for our office assistants and engineers. It is also providing high quality finished prints that are impressive to our customers and useful to our on-site workers.”
