Close the recycling circle

Many organisations readily collect their waste paper, but too often regard this as their total recycling effort. Unfortunately, this is only half the story regarding environmental impact. They also need to buy recycled to complete the circle, iIncreasingly, more forward-thinking businesses are doing so.

Despite the fact that recycling waste paper is better for the environment than landfill, which produces the greenhouse gas methane, there are a number of outdated perceptions impeding demand. WRAP provides objective, vendor-neutral information so businesses can make decisions based on environmental facts.

Recycled papers are as white as virgin grades. Production technologies have improved recycled papers, which are now indistinguishable from virgin stocks in terms of look and on-press performance. Whereas they were once characterised by distinctive wood flecks, particularly the lower uncoated grades, they have now evolved, unless, of course, you want the flecks for aesthetic purposes.

They needn’t cost any more either. Paper buyers and printers can generally achieve price parity with virgin papers if they consider the product options and negotiate with suppliers. As demand increases, market forces dictate that recycled products can only become increasingly competitive.

The amount of recycled paper used by business is set to grow as many see it as a way to boost their CSR credentials for no additional cost. Some companies are even demanding manufacturers add some tell-tale wood flecks to prove they’re using recycled.
