Reset the Benchmarks

I’ve lost count of the times I’ve said that, as fundamental processes, screen and digital printing are no ‘better’ or ‘worse’ than each other. Both systems have different sets of benefits and limitations.

So, depending on an image’s specific attributes, one or other process will offer the optimum solution. It’s true that digital is hogging the limelight. However, that is hardly surprising given the development potential surrounding this relatively new technology.

Two events this month add to this fascinating tussle. Inca’s Onset (see page 6) resets the digital benchmark. It’s big, it’s fast and its designed to cut a slice out of the existing digital, screen and litho pie. Only time will reveal its true impact but, as an example of pushing a process forward, it is certainly a machine worth watching.

Running parallel with the Onset launch, Fespa is preparing its Fespa Sensations book, designed to celebrate the unique special effects that screen printing is capable of. A book launch might not gather crowds like a new machine but this is important news. It proves, beyond doubt, that screen continues to add value in an increasingly cutthroat market.

The choice is yours. Print high volumes of low value images or low volumes of high value images. Actually there is a third choice: high volumes of high value images made possible by merging the benefits of screen, digital and litho. I know where my money is.
