Green policies wrap up the deal
Print and paper buyers are increasingly basing their purchasing decisions on environmental and corporate social responsibility policies according to new research by the waste and resources action programme (WRAP) run by the Recycled Paper Advocacy Team.
In a study of senior executives responsible for print and paper procurement within major organisations across the UK, the results revealed that in 67 per cent of cases their customers are demanding environmental and CSR credentials. Nearly half are finding that without such a policy in place they are not being included on tender and pitch lists.
Consequently, environmental and CSR policies are influential in the decision to procure recycled paper for over two thirds of respondents. In 17 per cent of cases they are the main driver for procuring recycled stock while for others the environmental or CSR policy has prompted them to look at being more environmentally friendly earlier than they might otherwise have been. This has a knock-on effect, with 58 per cent of organisations using recycled paper because it helps their marketing and brand image.
According to Jonathan Tame, head of WRAP’s Recycled Paper Advocacy Team: “Our research shows that environmental policies are now more than just green window dressing and can make the difference between organisations winning and losing business. There are significant environmental and business benefits to using recycled paper, which can provide a quick win in meeting environmental and CSR objectives. More importantly, reducing the amount of paper consumed together with buying recycled has a direct effect on reducing landfill.”
