Magnets make it at sea
When international charity, Mercy Ships, wanted to fit out its latest hospital ship, it faced a tough challenge with regard to wall mounting items.
Everything from notice boards to clothes pegs needed to be fixed to the wall without drilling into the ship's structure with screws or nails. Flexible magnetic extrusion specialist, Anchor Magnets, offered a solution in the form of its Neo-Pad products.
Anchor Magnets business development director, Mike Burton, explained: “Mercy Ships wanted to enable all staff working on board to be able to mount letters, postcards, mirrors, pictures and clothing in the cabins and communal areas. We proposed 12 different types of magnet to deal with these needs, all of which we produce in-house. Our Neo-Pad range was selected as it combined high magnetic strength and high friction. We then adapted the design to suit the applications on the ship, subsequently producing over 3,000 items for use on board.”
Following eight years of conversion work costing over £30million, the Africa Mercy will be travelling to Liberia where it will provide free healthcare to the poorest people of Liberia. More than 400 volunteers will crew the ship on its first mission.
