Research by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) recycled paper advocacy team has revealed that print and paper buyers are planning to increase their use of recycled paper significantly over the next five years.

Over two thirds have targets to increase the proportion of paper products using recycled content in the future and of these, half plan to increase their use by up to 20 per cent in the next 12 months. Others plan to be more bullish, with a quarter planning to increase their procurement by between 20 and 50 per cent and the other quarter by as much as 50 to100 per cent over the next year.

In addition to their own plans, print and paper buyers are optimistic about the general take-up of recycled paper, with over half expecting the industry as a whole to increase its use by between 20 and 50 per cent.

According to the head of WRAP’s recycled paper advocacy team, Jonathan Tame: “Many organisations have been keeping an eye on developments in the recycled paper sector and have increasingly been recognising the benefits. Today’s recycled papers are equal in quality and on-press performance to virgin stocks and, where competitively priced, there is no reason not to consider it in the procurement decision making process.”
