Robert Horne Sign & Display has launched an ambitious new recycling initiative, designed to help customers implement more environmentally friendly waste management policies. Editor Jon Barrett asked business development director, Steve Lister, to explain the R3 programme

Q: What does R3 stand for and where did the idea originate?

A: The three Rs stand for recover, recycle and reuse which is what we are proposing our customers in the sign and display sectors should do.

As paper merchants we have long been aware of the need to offer products that come from environmentally sustainable resources and have earned a whole host of accreditations in the process. Gradually, our focus has turned to plastic and vinyl products which, unlike paper, are not often immediately recyclable and use more hazardous manufacturing processes. However, we have started to offer more environmentally friendly alternatives and our long-term aim is to extend these choices throughout our entire portfolio of rigid and flexible materials.

Early in this process we looked at our own business, as we felt it was pointless merely selling greener products: we also wanted to ensure we were operating in an environmentally responsible way. We commissioned a specialist green consultancy to review our practices and suggest how we could improve.

Frankly, we were surprised to find there was a lot more we could be doing which made us realise there was probably also more our customers could be doing. We identified waste management was probably a key issue for most graphic providers and recognised that many businesses, especially the small to medium sized companies, have limited time to formulate a properly considered waste management strategy. That's where R3 comes in.

Q: What are you offering?

A: Customers are used to us delivering the sign and display products they use. Now, we can also take away their waste products. These will be collected by one of our waste management partners and sent for UK-based recycling.

Q: Surely every customer's needs are different?

A: We appreciate every company has different issues and priorities, which is why the programme begins with a waste audit to pinpoint particular problems and assess the amount and type of waste. This is followed with the presentation of a tailored solution, which assesses the business impact and suggests changes. For example, this might just mean setting up a series of waste bins or it might involve something much more radical, such as rearranging the factory to ensure waste can be deposited properly without incurring multiple journeys across a larger site. We'll then work with the company to fine-tune the recommended procedures and ensure they work smoothly before finally implementing the agreed waste collection solution.

Q: This sounds expensive?

A: Rather than racking up huge additional costs, companies should quickly realise significant savings, regarding increased efficiency and productivity, reduced waste collection fees and maximum returns on recycled materials. By signing-up, companies can take their first step towards ISO 14001 accreditation, which customers are beginning to stipulating.

Q: As you introduce greener materials, will demand for structured waste management reduce?

A: We certainly hope so. However, some degree of waste is inherent in any

manufacturing process and even the most environmentally friendly products must go somewhere to be recycled or re-used. The scheme can be tailored as company's needs change. A basic part of the programme is a monthly review so new requirements can be integrated quickly.

Q: Is this just a route to gain more business?

A: We see this initiative as an additional service but feel it is an issue all responsible suppliers are considering and feel that in light of more punitive land fill penalties and the growing impetus of the green movement, it won't be long before legislation obliges all companies to institute proper waste management procedures. Thus, we feel R3 helps customers stay ahead of the game and reap the benefits in advance of the mainstream. Rather than being a one off gimmick, our environmental initiatives are ongoing.
