A word about: people
‘We need to outperform and out-innovate our competitors'. So said Gordon Brown. We all know how valuable good people are and how important we feel both as employers and employees about being valued. It pays off in terms of motivation, loyalty and growing and developing personally in a career.
Prism is committed to supporting the industry in achieving the workforce it deserves, driving growth and innovation for a sustainable and profitable future. Our industry is undergoing some real and positive changes that should easily attract people to it, yet Proskills (in its Progress Report) found:
- Poor sector image and lack of promotion of the industry have led to a sharp decline in numbers joining through apprenticeships, together with an ageing workforce
- Print industry is perceived by employers to have the fastest changing need for the development of new skills, leading to
- Skills gaps which result in hard to fill vacancies, particularly front line (includes sales, telesales), technical (machine operators, engineers, graphic designers, computer technicians, screen printers) and managerial roles (includes factory managers, senior designers)
- Optimised criteria to allow holders of NVQs in unrelated fields to access NVQ programmes in their new job field
- Made flexible, credit based, cumulative learning programmes the way forward
What is the barrier to learning and progressing? The cost of developing people is paid back many times in terms of improving productivity and performance, which means competitiveness and ultimately: profitability. The cost barrier is really not there if you consider the cost/benefit. However, costs are real and money is needed for so many other things. So why not consider the e-learning programme from World of Print: accredited and supported by FESPA and prism.
The Screen Printing course is currently proving a success for UK printers who are valued by their employer for their achievements and have been able to fit studies around work commitments very easily. The whole course costs £60 to enroll and complete. It's got to be the best value in the industry today. Visit http://www.worldofprint.co.uk/.
