Event drives planet-friendly policy
Organisers of Fespa Digital Printing Europe 2008 have revealed that the sustainable development programme run by Geneva's Palexpo exhibition centre played a key role in its efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of its events.
In fact the electricity used to power Geneva Palexpo, including all exhibitor stands, comprised 100 per cent hydro-electric power, originating from renewable and/or environmentally-friendly sources. Recycling also played a key part in reducing the impact of the event as exhibitors were encouraged to recycle waste on their booths. As a result, 80 per cent of the total waste collected at Fespa was recycled, including 23 tonnes of wood which will be used to make MDF or block wood panels used by Ikea to produce furniture.
All visitors were also encouraged to make use of Geneva's public transport system. A free public transport card was given to all visitors and exhibitors who stayed at least one night in the city.
Fespa managing director, Frazer Chesterman, said: "Our aim is to support the printing community with guidance on a number of issues including the environment. The industry is looking to become more eco-friendly and print professionals are increasingly looking at environmentally responsible production and to align themselves with businesses that are eco-friendly. When choosing an exhibition centre, the planet-friendly nature and practices of Palexpo were key criteria for
Fespa."
