Critical Mass

Whenever a new venture starts, in almost any field of endeavour, in needs momentum before it can really accelerate away from the starting grid.

Momentum is gained from the endeavours of the individual or team who drive the enterprise forward until a tipping point is reached: usually when the enterprise breaks even or starts to make a profit. This can also be described as critical mass or the minimum amount of ‘radioactive' material needed to set off a chain reaction.

Thanks to Datateam's efforts in the form of Kelly Byne, Jon Barrett and the Maidstone-based team, we have reached critical mass with the third edition of Plastics and Board. Where do we go from here?

While the PBIF's USP is the magazine, bringing enormous opportunity to members with its vastly improved circulation and ability to access a far bigger marketplace than before, is this enough?

Kelly and I have been visiting and talking to members with the aim of covering the whole membership before long. In the meantime, please let me know if anyone is keen to form a small representative e-committee for the purpose of deciding the Federation's future. We are a niche operation and there is little point competing with bigger associations that can offer a huge range of services. Let's start with one more service, in addition to the magazine, that you would really value and would become a ‘must have' for members.

I look forward to hearing from you and to speaking to you in confidence in the near future.
