Thousands of customers have already used FotoInsight's printing service to transfer digital photos onto canvas. Now the on-line service is rolling out to Mediterranean countries, including France, Spain and Italy.

Modern fabrics optimised for ink absorption and standardised sizes facilitate an automated production process, which is said to result in professional quality and durability at lower prices. Canvases can be specified in sizes from 20 by 30cm to 60 by 80cm using synthetic fibres and fade resistant inks to aid longevity and colour brilliancy. The inks penetrate into the fabric which can then be mounted over the edges of a wooden frame, generating a 3D effect on the wall.

All materials are subject to testing and are guaranteed by their manufacturers to last 100 years. This extends to photo printing on photographic paper as well as to the canvas print.

FotoInsight's managing director, Klaas Brumann, said: "Image editing software helps to create impressive digital art to which the output of an inkjet printer can't do justice. Compared to images behind glass, a canvas print shows more detail and a fine structure. Due to the fabric folding around the frame it also has greater depth."
