Powell Packaging - Investing in the future
In these challenging times, many companies will seek to reduce expenditure and concentrate on maintaining their core business. Scunthorpe-based, specialist packaging company, Powell Packaging views things differently and has just installed an Apollo UV inkjet printer purchased from Sun Chemical.
Established in 1983, Powell Packaging has maintained its status as a fully independent business. Focusing on raw material procurement, lean management and operational costs has enabled the business to grow successfully over the subsequent 25 years. The company has also maintained a commitment to invest in equipment, which has enabled Powell Packaging to compete at the highest level within the industry. The overall result is a highly efficient business, which is able to offer a competitive package to its diverse customer base.
Powell Packaging considered many machines before choosing the Apollo 160WW from Sun Chemical. This exciting new printer from South Korean manufacturer DYSS is the smallest member of the Apollo range and features a new design Ricoh multi-drop head firing single droplets up to 1220 dpi apparent resolution. The heads are made of stainless steel, are robust and have an industrial design.
The printer has 16 such heads, 12 of which are dedicated to colour. There are two heads per colour (C, M, Y, K, LC, and LM) and four white heads, which produces a denser white than most other systems. The head assembly design offsets the four white heads which are mounted in front of the colour heads. This enables the white to be printed in one pass of the media, either as an underprint or overprint, depending on the factory built customer specification; this is unique with this technology and type of printer.
Robert Powell, Managing Director, Powell Packaging said: "The Apollo digital printer will compliment our existing services extremely well, enabling shorter runs to be completed quickly and more economically. It will also help satisfy a growing need for print on demand production. What really excites us, however, is that we now have the ability to venture into new markets."
Powell added: "Whilst the print quality from the Apollo was a key factor in our decision, we were very impressed by the structure, design and true industrial nature of this printer. We print on a diverse range of media and needed a robust machine to handle the different weight, thickness and volume of output required."
Mike Farmer, Equipment Manager, Sun Chemical said: "The Apollo range of printers offers a complete print solution for a wide variety of applications and will print on to acyclic, wood, Correx, Foamex, plastics, paper and doors. The UV ink is specially formulated to be flexible, which means if you print to a mesh or a banner, it can be used outside without it breaking in the wind. You can print to almost any rough surface - Velcro, ceiling tiles, fiberglass, glass (with primer application) and painted metals. We expect the Apollo UV ink to last for between 3-5 years when used in an external environment, making it an excellent proposition for signage applications."
The Apollo also features a well engineered fully integrated roll feed and takeup system, which incorporates a very useful ‘short roll' facility that uses all the roll ends that normally go to waste. This feature enables production of a vast array of flexible media, further broadening market possibilities. Apollo printers are made by Asia's largest Screenprint machinery manufacturer - DYSS in South Korea. DYSS is a well established company, which makes complete screenprinting lines for printing Plazma screens for L&G and Samsung and clean room applications in circuit board printing.
Sun Chemical is a non exclusive distribution partner for Planet Digital, the European distributor and support centre for DYSS. Planet Digital have a very strong background in UV Direct to Media printing systems and were pioneers in the late 1990's in bringing this new print technology into Europe. With many hundreds of installations of wide format printers they offer a great deal of knowledge and support.
Planet Digital is today a joint venture company with DYSS. Together they bring together a great deal of knowledge to the industry.
