Durst and Oschatz : Making history come to life
At the entrance, a 24m2 reproduction of a Johannes Grutzke painting was printed on all-purpose fleece and pasted onto the wall
In addition to a wide range of PoP, PoS, banner and exhibition work, Wiesbaden-based wide format photo lab, Oschatz, specialises in museum artwork.
Employing 52 people and running Durst Rho 600 and 350 printers, the company’s biggest job in 2006 was for the ‘Die Kaisermacher’ (The King Makers) exhibition in Frankfurt. More than 1,000 prints, on more than 20 different media (rigid and flexible), were printed for the exhibition.
The centre of the exhibition is formed by the ‘Goldene Bulle’ (The Golden Bull), the constitution of the HR Reich, its history and changes through 600-years, including major historical events and legislation created, for example, the treatment of minority groups in an empire that embraced nearly the whole of Europe.
All the graphic work was created by Oschatz, a complex job with more than 960 printouts of text, printed on wall-paper and laminated onto the walls. As part of the history of the city, text and images were printed on TUEV approved glass decoration transparent foils and placed on the windows in the cloisters of the Museum and the glass doors in the Historischem Museum.
900 exhibits
The text was printed for the more than 900 exhibits on the Rho 600 in 600dpi with white ink on black Forex. Also, four extra wide ‘Emperor-red’ doors at the entrance of each museum, plus 19 steles indicating historical places and routes were all printed on the Rho 600 on Alucobond and Lentasign.
For the entrance of the Historical Museum, Oschatz printed a 24m2 large reproduction of a painting by Johannes Grutzke on all-purpose fleece, which was then pasted directly onto the walls for a realistic finish. The same all-purpose fleece was used as background for all the showcases. At the Institut fur Stadtgeschichte a wall of book shelves was reproduced using the Rho 350 on transparent vinyl, while in the Kindermuseum backgrounds and panels were printed on gold foil.
All purpose fleece is an inexpensive print media made of specific cellulose and textile fibres, combined with polymer binders. Available in rolls up to 1.2m width and 20m long, it can be printed by a Rho 600 (with roll-to-roll device) or Rho 350 using either Durst Rigid Ink (Rho 600) or Rho Roll Ink, in level 2/4pass, UV lamp step eight. The fleece can be applied to walls using standard fleece adhesive.
Oschatz’s experience of colour management and creativity allowed it to select and use a wide variety of different media to support the effects of each theme. As a result, the exhibition producer, Kreativburo Atelier Markgraph, said that it was thanks to Oschatz’s know how the exhibition has been the realisation of a dream.
