Training is all above board
Apprentices in the paper and board manufacturing industry can now participate in an approved National Qualifications Framework, developed by sector skills council for the process and manufacturing sector, Proskills, and the newly formed Qualifications Reform Group (QRG).
Prior to this, no nationally recognised qualifications framework existed. This led to inconsistencies in the choice of qualification and confusion over the value of apprentices' individual achievements.
Standards controller at Proskills, Paul Preston, said: "The new framework for paper and board apprenticeships has been a fantastic achievement, with thanks to QRG which helped employers accept ownership of the qualifications. They now have faith in the programme and are registering apprentices with us.
"This new framework draws the needs of the paper and board industry into one document. It offers a structure that will ensure training and assessment is carried out systematically, in line with the requirements of the employer and the trainee. It also provides an environment in which individuals can develop skills and attributes which will contribute to the success of the industry."
Proskills' Richard Moore, added: "Apprenticeships are one of the most cost-effective ways to train staff. By combining on and off the job training, apprenticeships ensure that learners are trained in the skills that are relevant to their work at the same time as increasing motivation and company loyalty."
