Solvent technology unites sign makers and screen printers
Published:  01 September, 2007

Although they represent two different markets, the buying patterns of sign makers and screen printers are pretty similar, with around 20 per cent in both areas looking to invest in new solvent printers in the next 12 months. These findings emerged through research conducted by large format print specialist, City and West End (CWE) Solutions.

Managing director at CWE Solutions, Doug Gilbertson, explained: “We have been supplying large format printers to different markets for over 10 years. In that time, we have seen pen plotters for the CAD industry develop into graphics plotters for the signwriting and poster industry. We pride ourselves in conducting research in order to develop the right systems and solutions for the markets in which we are involved.”

In total, CWE Solutions spoke to 721 people across both industries. Findings revealed that out of the two market places, sign makers and poster writers are leading the way with the adoption of the new solvent printing technology with 37 per cent either wanting to install or already having installed a wide format digital solvent printer. Around 29 per cent of screen process printers are in this position. However, the organisational make-up of the two markets is very different, with sign and poster writers made up of predominantly small family businesses with owner/managers making the purchasing decisions while screen process printers were more developed, with more support and administration staff.
