Less than a year ago Vision Supplies Ltd the Leeds based consumable supplier launched a new range of Multi Substrate UV process inks, the first product launched was THINK - Type 01 a unique formula of screen printing ink designed to appeal to a broad sector of point of sale printers.
Type 01 adheres to a wide range of substrates from paper and board through to self-adhesive vinyls and some polypropylene products, this ultra modern formulation is free of water and has a number of key benefits including low build, low odour, free from HDDA and NVP, its exceptional high mileage adds to the economy of use as does very competitive pricing.
Sales of Type 01 have increased each month since its launch but the company have not been resting on their success, this month sees the launch of the second THINK ink aptly named Type 02, Colin Hale, Operations Director at Vision takes up the story “We began developing our range of inks some considerable time ago with Type 01 we wanted to introduce a true multi substrate ink that could be used on as wide a range of substrates as possible, it is press ready and low cost in use, with the volumes of sales we have achieved in a relatively short term it seems our customers really like our new THINK products.”
One such Vision customer is the Nottingham based print solutions provider Clearpoint Print Services a company renowned for their high quality 4 colour process work, Mark Housley the Production Director was involved with the early development of Type 01
“Our client list is extensive, we also work with other print companies in a trade capacity; producing a wide range of products. I think we have probably made a rod for our own back in that these clients expect the very best in 4 colour process screen printing when they place an order with Clearpoint. Initially I was very reticent when we were contacted by Vision to trial their new Type 01 ink, I suppose it is one of those things, we already had a good ink and were reluctant to spend too much time testing other products, but we have worked with Vision before and I knew they were very serious about what they were doing, I can honestly say that within 3 months of testing their first Type 01 formulation we had converted to the range and have been using the ink successfully ever since. In my opinion it is the best process ink our company has used and an ink that has been printed on at least 2 award winning jobs, we now use Type 01 process colours more or less exclusively, the mileage is exceptional, the build is low, and just as importantly the printers like using it.”
Since the launch of Type 01 Vision Supplies have been developing their new product testing Type 02 extensively in production with their customers, Colin continues “At the end of the day it is pointless trying to develop products that our customers don’t want or need, Type 02 is a very significant development of the THINK range, simply explained multi substrate inks can be divided into two general categories the first suitable for paper, board and vinyl derivatives, the second suitable for the more “troublesome” substrates like fluted polypropylenes, with Type 02 we believe we have formulated a high performance product to bridge the gap between the two. Type 02 will readily adhere to most paper and boards, flexible and rigid pvcs, vinyls and polypropylenes, however we have a significant advantage over our competitors beyond this wide ranging performance we have managed to maintain similar characteristics of that of Type 01 maintaining the low build, eliminated the use of water. And we continue to offer low cost in use, something becoming more and more important to the modern screen printer.”
“Producing an ink to bridge the performance gap was a challenging thing to formulate” says Paul Waterton, Managing Director “but to produce ink that is cost effective and has such a wide dynamic performance was even more difficult. Ultimately our goal is to produce just one process ink for our clients to hold in stock, simplifying the process, reducing stocks and eliminating the potential for printers to select the wrong ink type, mistakes are costly! Type 02 gives our client base this option” he continues “our products are launched only after thorough on site testing and our success to date has developed through this attention to detail
and with the valued support
of our clients.”
Another company involved in the development of Type 02 inks is The Print Centre, Jon Davis is the Managing Director, his company started using Type 01 inks soon after their launch. Jon continues,
“We are very impressed with Type 01 and have printed a wide range of work very successfully with it, we also produce a lot of fluted polypropylene for our clients and Type 02 is better suited to this. Its adhesion is better on this substrate and it has excellent durability with very good resistance to water. Our company has been using the first production batches of Type 02 for the last three months or so, we are very happy with the performance and results from both ink types.”

The ultimate process ink?
Vision’s attention to detail extends far beyond the supply of their own THINK range of screen inks, the pages of Screen Process and Digital Imaging have been illuminated with numerous features about Chim 92’s screen cleaning machinery and screen cleaning chemicals, which Vision is the exclusive distributor of in the UK, Eire and Australia, products which are being used by an increasing number of screen printing companies throughout the world, these companies have searched for more modern and progressive solutions to the time consuming and labour intensive screen cleaning process, companies who no longer wanted to continue the process using high volumes of oil based solvents or caustic anti-stain products, Colin Hale continues “The future growth of our company will be based around our search for innovative class leading products from leading suppliers like Chim 92 and the development of new products like our own THINK range. Our product ranges are unique, innovative and we believe some of the best available in the market today, we also supply high quality photo quality emulsions and squeegee blades, but finding the right type of products for a very demanding market takes time and methodical testing this is something we have been very successful at to date.”
The future looks bright for Vision Supplies, Paul Waterton continues “Our clients are under increasing pressure to deliver more demanding work with shorter deadlines and ever decreasing prices, which has been the case for a few years now, I believe that our innovative approach to consumable supply to develop new dynamic products that are easier to use and lower in cost
can only help maintain profit margin for our clients, we are
very aware of the pressure the screen printer is under from alternative printing processes, but Vision’s objective is not
simply to increase prices on an annual basis like many of our competitors! It is quite the opposite. We work closely with our clients to reduce their costs and increase their profit margins,
and we are very proud to include many of the leading companies in our industry as loyal customers.”
So what’s up Vision’s sleeve for the future, when pushed a little, he concludes “future plans, well an obvious area of continued growth is the digital market place and we have been involved in the development of some interesting products for launch in the not too distant future but this is something I think best left for another editorial.”
