An educated choice cuts surplus printing
Published:  26 July, 2008

Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) has signed a three-year contract to install a range of Canon technology in its in-house print centre. The deal includes an imagePRESS C7000VP, two iR150 HV black-and-white machines, two light production CLC5151 colour devices, four iR7105 machines as well as eight networked document scanning devices. This will enable the university to manage high-volume printing in-house, including production of bespoke prospectuses for students.

Printing collateral on-demand and in-house will enable MMU to cut its costs as well as its carbon footprint by reducing waste. It will also improve MMU's rating in the University Green League table, which measures the environmental standards of colleges and universities.

MMU's print strategy will be based across four print units on various campuses. These will act as feeders into the central reprographics and print centre, where the imagePRESS C7000VP, the two iR150 and the iR7105s supported by an imagePROGRAF iPF9000 large format printer are housed.

With 75 per cent of its annual print volume produced over a seven month period, MMU required reliable print and imaging solutions for high-volume, on-demand, short-run and long-run print jobs. Consequently, the print centre will use Fusion Pro variable data and Digital Storefront production workflow solutions to provide on-time printing of material such as posters, leaflets, cards, course information and booklets.

Head of professional print management, Canon UK, Ben Milford, said: "With prospective students increasingly judging universities not only by academic standards, but also by their green policies, we are pleased that MMU has chosen our print solutions to implement customised printing, which will help to cut down surplus printing."
